October Superintendent's Corner

Congratulations and thanks go out to the entire Lewis County C-1 School District faculty and staff for the hard work and commitment they pour into our kids’ education each and every day.  The official APR (Annual Performance Report) scores will soon be released and I am very proud to say that Lewis County C-1 preliminary reports indicate that the district and each individual building performed extremely well.  The Annual Performance Report is based on the state performance standards and are reviewed for accreditation purposes at the district level.  This is essentially Missouri’s own system for school and district accountability.

Hats off to HES!  The Highland Elementary building just completed their review for being recognized as an “Exemplary Professional Learning Community” and the review committee was very positive.  We will not know the official results until January, but all indicators seem to point to the Highland Elementary School earning that designation!

Congratulations Coach Scifres, Coach Richardson, and the Highland Lady Cougars Softball team for finishing 2nd place at the District Championships and completing another highly successful season.  The Jr. High Softball season has finished and they had an excellent season as well.  The Cross Country team continues to improve and has two more races before heading into the District competition on Halloween.  The Marching Highlanders, in usual fashion, are receiving top honors at area parades and field show competitions as they prepare for their big performance at a bowl game in San Diego, California this winter.  They just received 1st Place in the parade and 2nd place in the field show competition at the Clark County Parade of Champions and Field Show Competition!  Congratulations to Mr. Christian & Mr. Sparks and the entire band – your hard work is paying off!  Coach Swisher and the Highland football team plan to improve their record this coming Friday night at home against Louisiana, which is also the 2015 senior night game.  Hope to see everyone out supporting the Cougars!

As you can see, the school year is off to a great start and there are lots of positive things happening at Lewis County C-1.  Last spring, we assembled a group of community and school personnel to review facility concerns and to begin developing a plan to address the needs of the district.  Through the strong fiscal management of the LCC1 Board of Education, we have been able to allocate some funds into the 15-16 annual budget for some improvements to be made.  The committee will now need to determine what needs to be addressed first and what plans should be made for future facility repairs/improvements.

Lewis County C-1 has been facing a declining enrollment over the last few years, which directly and negatively impacts the district budget.  Intensifying that problem even more, is the fact that the district lost approximately $100,000 in local revenue this year thanks to the pipelines going from locally assessed to state-assessed property.  This problem will most likely worsen and cause the district to miss out on even more revenue heading into next school year.  The good news is:  there may be a way for the district to avoid the loss of additional revenue and with no additional cost to the patrons of the community.  This will be a topic of discussion at upcoming board meetings and in my future articles.

Please look for additional information regarding these issues and more in my upcoming articles or call my office if you would like to get more information from me.  Don’t forget to come out and support the Cougars this Friday night for senior night and watch the band perform their awesome new field show!
